What are your favorite genres to read?

Honestly, I’m obsessed with books from all genres, but I do tend to gravitate towards commercial fiction and fantasy—hence why I am writing stories in these genres. However, as a writer I value the importance of research, which is why I’ve shared some of the inspiration for my current WIPs here.

Do you research before you write? I’d love to hear about your research process! Feel free to contact me on Twitter @A_K_Perry, or comment 🙂

  • Mindfulness for Beginners – Jon Kabat-Zinn
  • Breaking The Habit of Being Yourself – Dr. Joe Dispenza
  • The Healing Code – Dr. Alexander Lloyd
  • Therapy Pets: The Animal-Hyman Healing Partnership by Jacqueline J. Crawford
  • The Power of Wagging Tails by Dawn A. Marcus
  • Pet Partners – Program & Website/Blog
  • When Breath Becomes Air – Paul Kalanithi
  • Dying to Be Me – Annita Moorjani
  • NDERF (website)

And, of course, as many current titles I can get my hands on, as well as anything and everything from my favorite authors, including:

  • Mitch Albom
  • V. E. Schwab
  • Harper Lee
  • Jodi Picoult
  • J.K. Rowling
  • C.S. Lewis
  • J.R.R. Tolkien
  • James Scott Bell (for books on the craft of writing)
  • Christopher Vulgar (The Writer’s Journey)
  • Jospeh Campbell

As for some additional reads, I currently recommend:

  • Love, Hate, and Other Filters by Samira Ahmed
  • Vicious by V.E. Schwab
  • Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
  • Nobody Cares by Anne. T. Donahue
  • Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud

Don’t forget field research! Not only will experiences heighten the realistic depiction of your settings and characters, but it’s fun! What writer doesn’t love a new experience?
